For more than three centuries this corner of Stellenbosch has been ours to keep: its old vines, its soil, its people and over 12 generations, Stellenrust has grown into one of Stellenbosch's largest family-owned wine estates. Our vineyards have expanded. Our wines now travel the world. But the way we see ourselves has remained remarkably simple: a family farming its land, making its wines and passing something meaningful from one generation to the next.

Some stories are better
heard than read.

In 1692 a master stone mason named Douwe Gerbrand Steyn settled on a Stellenbosch farm called Rustenburg, finding rust, peace, in Stellenbosch. He had laid the corner stones of the Castle of Good Hope, and was among the first to plant vineyards in the Cape. The first wines to carry our name followed in 1928.

Legend has it that a flip of a coin between Steyn and Governor Simon van der Stel decided who would own which side of the Helderberg: Vergelegen to the one, Stellenrust to the other.

Meet the family

Managing partners Kobie van der Westhuizen and Tertius Boshoff each honoured a family rule older than themselves: study a degree other than wine before you join the estate. “A Da Vinci is born, not fabricated,” their grandfather held. “Wine is art; it must run in your veins.”
