Our Soil · Sons of the soil

The ground
beneath our feet.

Custodians of old vines, rooted deep in Stellenbosch.

The land

Nearly four hundred hectares, each site chosen for its soil and its light.

Stellenrust harvests from close to 400 hectares of family-owned vineyards surrounding the town of Stellenbosch. From the decomposed granite of the Helderberg's Golden Triangle, to the maritime sandy clay of the Bottelary Hills, to the slate slopes of the Devon Valley, each site is specifically suited and selected for the grape varieties and the wines we make.

Three wards, one estate

Granite, clay and slate.

The soils we farm read like a map of Stellenbosch: sand, shale, decomposed granite, iron-rich earth and coffeestone. Each lends its own signature to the fruit, and our role as winemakers is to understand that character and preserve it from vineyard to bottle.

Tertius Boshoff · Cellarmaster

We are custodians of old vines. They know best how to express their fruit in any vintage, and we merely shepherd their knowledge into the bottle.

The oldest stalks

38.1 hectares. One of South Africa's largest private growers of old vines.

This season we farm 38.1 hectares of certified old vines. These old stalks tell a story of their own; it is tangible, and it lives in the soil. Where others replant for yield, we have kept faith with the vine, and the wine is deeper for it.
